Carlo Zaniolo was born in Italy and came to the US for his graduate studies, which he completed in 1976 with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Los Angeles. Starting with his dissertation, Carlo’s research addressed seminal topics in Databases and Knowledge Bases; he also served as the program chair of several conferences in those areas. After working for Bell Labs and other research centers for several years, Carlo returned to his Alma Mother in 2001 as a professor of Computer Science and the first holder of the Norman E. Friedmann Chair in Knowledge Science. Professor Zaniolo is now serving as the director of the new Scalable Analytics Institute of UCLA, and he will next describe some of the interesting research activities being conducted there.
